Reflection
on introduction
The teacher started the class by mentioning the name of the chapter i e properties of matter. Then teacher first
stated the learning objectives. Teacher explains the importance of studying
properties of matter. Teacher gives statement about pure substance, mixtures
and separation of mixtures. Then teacher showed a picture in the textbook and
briefly gave an idea about states of matter. By introducing states of matter,
previous knowledge of the student is checked and he also provided real life
examples of three states of matter. But linking of new knowledge with the
previous knowledge was not done properly.
After mentioning about state of matter the teacher directly jumped into an
activity. Before performing the activity, objectives of the activities was
clearly stated. The activity provided was suitable for the transaction of
content 'matter occupies space'. Activity 1 was clearly performed so that
everything which is important was visible. Explanation of the activity was also
clearly done. But, affective domain characteristics of the students don’t get
nourished by this activity.
After that second activity was performed. Second activity performed was
suitable for the concept formation that 'gas also requires space’. While doing these
activity affective domain characteristics such as curiosity, interest,
motivation etc developed among students. Explanation of the second activity was
also good. Then teacher consolidated the concept formed in in both activities
that is matter occupies space.
In the third activity teacher tied two balloons at two ends of an axoblade.
Before performing this activity, teacher failed to state objective of the
activity. Teacher made hole in one balloon and showed that gas also has mass.
This activity was suitable for the content to be transacted i e gas also has
mass. This activity also helped to develop affective domain characteristics
such as interest. Teacher encouraged the student by saying that you can also
perform this activity in your home. After the activity concept was also
explained.
At the final stage of introduction three activities are consolidated and
definition of matter is provided to the students as 'anything which occupies
space and has mass is referred as matter'. At the end teacher tried to link
previous knowledge to the new knowledge and succeeded.
After consolidation, teacher created 3 tables to check whether learning
objectives was achieved by students or not.
Explanation of three states of matter was given and real life example also
provided
presentation
reflection
In this class the teacher tried to
transact the topic 'properties of matter'. For that purpose the teacher had
given an activity which shows that crystals of potassium permanganate when
dissolved in water producers pink colour.
The teacher had also showed another activity i e the making of sugar solution.
Then teacher told the student that matter is made up of small particles. Then
teacher discussed about out arrangement of particles in different states of
matter such as solid liquid and gas.
Now, we can check that is the given activities are suitable for the content to
be transacted. Since particle arrangement in solid, liquid and gases to be
taught ; while doing an activity if the teacher had select particles of any
solid material such as chalk powder
or wood powder, student will able to relate powders of chalk/wood to the
arrangement of particles in solids.
Now we have to check the hierarchy of presentation of material. Teacher
initially taught about matter and then switches into properties of matter. So
we can say that the hierarchy of topic is maintained.
Now we have to check that is the given activity is suitable for the
construction of concept.
The given activities of making sugar solution and potassium permanganate
solution was suitable for developing the concept i e, matter is made up of
particles. But it does not give any idea about arrangement of particles in
solid, liquid and gas.
Now we have to check whether the students are able to construct concept from
discussion points given by the teacher.
In this class we can observe that the teacher failed to ask many questions in
order to make concept clearer. That is less effort was taken by the teacher to
construct the concept through discussion. Teacher failed to ask many questions
and proper scaffolding was not there. There was no proper interaction time
between student and teacher. Teacher merely presented the content orally.
While executing the discussion, teacher failed to arouse affective domains
characteristics such as motivation, curiosity, interest etc.
While transacting last part of presentation i e, conversion of matter from one
state to another an animated video or chart having pictures must be used to
provide better understanding.
After that consolidation of presentation and home assignment was given. That
was very good.
